Webpage Remediation

Actually, the assignments I remediated the most were the Action Figure for Discourse Communities you're involved in and the Grammar Brochure assignment. For the Discourse Community one, I made sure that I elaborated much more on my different roles I have in my life to give more meaning to the reader about the differences between them and all of the separate intricacies they have. On my grammar brochure, I did a better job of making an actual brochure this time, instead of just a long-winded essay about what you should do to fix comma splices. In this new format I feel that it is much more user-friendly and everyone will have a much easier time trying to figure out exactly what I was trying to accomplish with the assignment.

"jobs and such" response

I liked this article. It was brief and helpful and I agree with his advice. I find it hard to fulfil experience requirements, and hope that his advice on saying what I have done that was similar to what the job requires will work. It is hard to have had experinence when you are applying for your first job related to your field, but hopefully someone will give me a chance. Website remediation

It was hard to chose one example of remediation within the website. Overall I feel that the most apparent one would be the fact that a whole messy notebook can fit on one online portfolio. When we put it on the portfolio we have just created a new audience and a new way for others to view it. I also learned a lot about my organizational skills along with that because I felt that my notebook for class was organized but once I tried to find everything there were documents missing. I also realized that I had not named some of my assignments and responses correctly. The website was a way for me to organize myself and everything that I have done in the class thus far.

Remediations

For my portfolio I had to remediate an entire assignment. I ended up changing my entire response and assignment for our workplace literacy journal. The first assignment we had to was represent our business writing is all around us. Well at first I did my represent all the information in a CD, but apparently I didn't do I good job on it so I ended up remediating it to a directory. Here is a look at the remediation and an explanation http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/aladams/index.htm

Portfolio blog

The most interesting remediation I've done is the portfolio as a whole. All the different types of media are put together to make an entirely new website that represents what I learnedin this semester. Each student probably took away something different from our assignments and responses, and by chosing certain blogs and responses to add to our portfolio, we were able to set ourselves apart from each other through our own creativity. For example, I used a template for each of my pages so that the reader can navigate through each section of the portfolio from any page. I also chose to make a drop down menu on my Responses page to help the reader find each response easily. The specific pictures that I used show my personality and the types of things that I like. This helps to personalize the portfolio and make it unique. Most of my images were either placed on the template or in the center of each page with text nearby for proximity purposes. I also used pictures of myself for the page with my personal information.

We were supposed to remediate?

Just kidding I know what we were supposed to do. As far as my webpage goes, I really don't think I have many examples of remediation that will stand out. I have a couple examples and I think that the best examples I have are the icons at the top of the page. Each icon stands for a specific page and if you think about it each icon is sort of remediating that certain topic. For example, there is an icon that is a computer with a road going through it. If you thought it was a blog than you are right. Blogs had to do with computers and what better way to represent that page than with a computer. Other than that I didn't feel many of my assignments needed to be changed so I left them in their entirety. All I know is that I'm glad this assignments over and that the portfolio is finally done!

Remediation

My webpage doesn’t really have one example of remediation that is very clear and noticeable.  Even with the various items that I had to remediate, the message of the assignments did not significantly change.  However, when forced to choose one such example, my grammar brochure comes to mind.  Originally this brochure was a lively tool that could be used to explain comma splices.  In order to make this brochure viewable on my website I had to scan the image and place it on my website as a simple picture, drastically reducing the affect that it once had.  If you were attempting to teach a point on something as boring as grammar, one would most certainly read a fun pamphlet rather than yet another boring explanation from a website.  My constraints with putting this brochure on the web greatly diminish what I was originally trying to accomplish; making grammar somewhat enjoyable.  This page can be viewed here.

I love remediation.....

SIKE!!!!  In regards to the most interesting thing that I had to remediate on my online portfolio, the contents of my personal notebook is what intrigued me the most.  I wanted to literally scan the actual pages of my notebook which contains numerous poems, rhymes and quotes that I've accumulated over the years.  The rhymes themselves were hard to remediate, but I decided to create a separate webpage for them and I had to choose those rhymes I felt represented me best.  Although a couple are questionable in language (I'm aware of my choice of words-but the truth is that I wanted to capture the moment on paper-or in this case-on a screen), but I did provide a statement which says that I did not intend to offend anyone and that the writings were representative of how I was feeling at the time.  The words in the last rhyme, which I'm aware is the most questionable of all, are strong, but I had to share a bad experience to reveal some personal feelings that I felt should be known.  My decision to put these rhymes on a webpage was difficult because I didn't want people to know to much about what I do outside of class, but I figured that I might as well give people a taste of what I've been through because I know that people exist out there who have been through worst, which is sad and yet comforting at the same time.  The goal I was trying to achieve by remediating these writings of mine was to show the flexibility that writing can have in general, since I exhausted my business writing cliche (sell your ideas).  In the same manner that business writing accomplishes a certain goal, my writing was just a way to vent stress from numerous experiences.  Well, with that said, I think I'm done with this post.

remediation

While creating my website I found myself remediating quite a bit. The best example of this was the Doll assignment we had. I took the sketch of my doll, her accessories, and her clothes and turned them into link buttons on my website for assignment three. Once these links are clicked, it takes you to the appropriate part of the paper I had written. By doing this I hope to break up the monotony of a regular paper, letting viewers chose which part of the paper to view when. Also, it breaks up the long paragraph style paper and makes it appear shorter than it really is.

remediation on web site

I actually didn't do too much remediation on my web site.  I did have to do some things though, to make sure that it was viewable.  I had to change all my word documents into .html format.  It is much easier to read them on the web in this format, plus anyone can access these.  Sometimes word documents are hard to access on the internet.  Also, I had to scan in some of my sketches.  I had drawings for my discourse community doll and the first sketch of the index page.   If i didn't scan these pictures and turn them into digital files, there is no way anyone else could have seen them and they wouldn't have been on my webpage and it wouldn't be complete.  So, the remediation I did was basically out of necessity and ease for users.

Publishing on the Web

I have used several forms of showing the work I have done in B & TW 250 on my website.  I have simply converted most of my assignments into HTML format so they can easily be viewed by anyone who is surfing the web.  This ensures that everyone who has a web browser can view the information without having to use microsoft word.  I have also scanned some images such as my grammar brochure, my doll box, and my web page sketch.  This is the best way to represent something that I have either drawn or cut/pasted together.  For some things such as my web page design response I have done in the most obvious way possible and that is simply writing the information in HTML form originally.  Of course I do not have time or knowledge to write each piece of HTML seperately, so I use the macromedia or microsoft front page to edit most of my websites.  I think that by using multiple ways of showing the work I have done it will be easier for viewers to see that the class is not as simple as just writing memo's and letters.

always save your documents

well i made the mistake of not saving my assignments to a disk. dumb, i know. anyhow i thought id share the interesting experience i had of scanning in all my assignments for five hours.  so i have all the original assignments on my webpage.  i actually think it looks pretty cool.  but i wasn't able to remediate my assignments cause it would have taken way too long to rewrite all of them. anyways i learned a valuable lesson which is to save all of my work on a disk!

My webpage

As far as my webpage goes, I don't think that I have one specific example of remediation that really stands out.  I think that what is remediated most is all of the assignments as a whole.  I put up pretty much all my work from the entire semester onto one webpage.  The corresponding assignments and responses are linked together.  I think this changes the message of my assignments because i changed them from being a long series of classwork, writing, and revision to just being a sampling of different types of business writing that somebody can browse through in a few minutes.  I think it gives a good idea of what we have learned in the class, but in a much faster way than we have actually learned it.

Remediation

The remediation that I have done for this portfolio is the design of the box for discourse community doll. When I did the assignment, I used power point presentation to create four different sides for the box and print them out to hand in along with the response. In order to let the viewers to see the images of the box, I used my digital camera to take pictures of all four sides of the box and present them on my web. Apart from that, I just organized my note-form lecture by using the table provided by Dreamweaver. There is not much remediation involved in creating the portfolio. Basically, I just cut and paste my assignment, responses, blog posts and group presentation because I already have them in Word Document. Besides that, I provided links for the reading assignments in our course package that I can find online and also the audio clip for my group presentation.

Remediation on Website

So, for the most part, while I did not change the message I was conveying with any of my assignments, I did have to alter the actual format in which it was portrayed.  For instance, for assignment one, the workplace literacy book that I made, I had to put the book on to a scanner in order to create an image that could be put on the website.  Similarly, for the "literary laura" doll, I had to scan the picture to put it up on the web.  However, scanning these into computer images sometimes had negative effects.  For instance, with the workplace literacy book, the words became difficult to read so I had to put a caption underneath it so people could understand it.  For the rest of the website (assignments, responses, and blog posts) I really just had to take things that were individual works and put them together to create a unified and coherent whole.  The same goes for my personal webpage.  On there, I took many pictures I have from diverse places/periods of time and unite them as a single, understandable document.

remediation

Many of my assignments were digital images, so it was easy for me to represent them on my website without changing them.  I did not have to re-work them, just create a link to each file that I had already created.  Some remediation that I have done was rewording the assignment descriptions into breif summaries and posting them before each assignment link.  I also used scanned images of the documents I created that were not already digital.  In all, I remediated a collection of previously printed off assignments into a more organized collection on my website.  The way a person can see what I did in class was transformed by the website, from a bunch of losse papers in a notebook to an organized site that explaines each assignment and adds visual aids through several links.

Jobs

I thought that the post was informative. I've heard the same from some people that I know that work in the human resources department of various tech companies in California. One guy told me that the biggest problem is just getting your foot in the door. Once you have the interview, you can be guaranteed that they will take you seriously.

I was also told that the quality of the coverletter matters a lot. If they feel that you can't sell yourself with the coverletter, they will not invite you for the crucial interview.

Portfolios

I did all of my work on the computer for this class so it was really easy for me to convert my work for use on the web. Because I had everything on the computer, I could easily export them to Adobe Acrobat format and then link them on the website. Doing this allowed me to preserve the original quality of the assignments and I didn't have to rework any of them. I know this isn't remediation but I think that the end result will be better than if I had remediated my assignments to fit on to a website.

Job

I feel as though Kevin has a pretty good idea going here. Soon I will be starting to search for jobs and a tutorial would be EXTREMELY helpful. I think as soon as he gets his thoughts together, and finds a way to clearly organize them, he'll be on the road to success, as well as helping others on their road to success as well. Finding a job can be an extremely stressful time in one's life and if there were a tutorial, perhaps a book of hints even, it might lighten the load a bit.

Job Stuff

My advice is to be relaxed and simply be yourself in the job interview.  I did this when I was interviewing for a district manager job at College Works Painting, and when I tell you that it made the interviews fly by and seem really easy, I mean it.  I got the job at my 2nd formal interview and it was so simple: I told stories about my life!  I don't consider myself to be much of a self-seller, but this was such a simple thing to do that it didn't seem like I was interviewing for a job, it just felt like I was talking about myself...with a suit on.

Tell stories about high school experiences, past jobs, college experiences, or even things you've done within your group of friends or even family!  It is really simple to get someone to talk about themself, but it can be very complicated to get them to calm down in a job interview.  If you take the time to relax and practice with a friend over what you think it's going to be like, you will be just fine!  Even if you don't get the job, you need to keep your head up and remember that the more practice you get at interviewing for jobs, the better your next interview will be!

remediation & portfolios

As you are all now in the process of remediating your work and making it appropriate for the web, I'd like you to share with each other how you are doing this. Pick the example that you think is the most interesting remediation you've done for your portfolio and discuss it here. Talk about how you chose to represent an assignment, a response, your portfolio as a whole, your personal life, etc. What work is that particular part of your portfolio doing? What choices do you make to achieve that work? How did you represent images and text on your website? If you can, link this post up to your webpage to show the example of your representation.

Getting a JOB

I think this Kevin guy has some really good ideas and gives some pretty good advice.  A little disorganized and lenthy, but the points are definitely dead on in terms of finding a job.  I'm just now realizing the importance of a cover letter and how it really sets you apart from the other applicants.  Writing on how to get a job and the basics of cover letters and resume appearance is of major importance especially to us college kids who will be shortly entering the working field.

Getting a j o b......

In respects to the comments that Hannah's friend made, I couldn't agree more in every aspect, considering that my brother and I had numerous discussions on the importance of the application process.  The cover letter is very important and my brother told me that it is obviously the first thing that an employer will see, so make it "tight" (good/exceptional).  The wording that one chooses is also important and my stance is to always keep it simple yet professional.  Don't overload your resume with your 10 cent words and always make sure you cater your resume to the job field.  I've found that the application process is way more involved than thought to be, but with proper preparation, one should do just fine.  I can't believe that some of my fellow students use the poorest common sense when involved with the whole job process.  I hope they learn from their lessons and they could definitely use Kevin's blunt honesty.

Job Rant

Well, I believe honesty is the best policy and what Kevin has written is hard-core honesty.  When I went to the multi-cultural job fair I was disgusted to see all people who had not taken the time to research the companies, write cover letters, or bring résumés.  I was thinking did these people actually expect to get interviews with the companies?  I think every component that Kevin included is absolutely required to get someone’s attention in a cover letter.  However I do feel that the résumé is the most important part of trying to get a job.  As proof some companies do not even ask for a cover letter from a prospective employee.  However, as some do, it can be the most important to catch someone’s attention.              I think that it is very important to do spell and grammar check AND have someone look it over.  I think it very unprofessional when I encounter speller or grammar mistakes in any form of business writing.  In every business setting or situation, there should be editors or co-workers to look over every published or turned in piece of writing.  So overall Kevin’s rant and requests  are very legitimate and should be easily meet by any person interested in interviewing or finding a job.
